Jeff with the Cheetahs
I grew up in the United States and had my first taste of international travel when I was 16 going to Adelaide, Australia as part of a short-term exchange program. At the age of 18, I went to South Africa as a Rotary exchange student solidifying the travel bug inside of me. I returned to the US and received my Bachelor’s from Georgetown University and my MBA from Rice University. From there I started climbing the corporate ladder first as a management consultant and then as a marketing director for a medical device company.
While I found some to to travel during those corporate years, I found it increasingly difficult to balance my work life with my personal interests and passions. So, in 2006, I left my job to prepare for my career break leaving in March 2007. I started in South America because I really wanted to explore the continent and finally become fluent in Spanish, a goal which had always eluded me. I also made a quick pass through Europe, Turkey and Egypt. In January 2009, I moved to Bogota, Colombia and started planning Career Break Secrets. That same year I was asked to write the lead article for a major healthcare journal’s leadership issue, Case In Point, about my experience. Click here to download the pdf version.
I hope that this site can help show you what’s possible “out there” and encourages you to take the plunge whether it’s for one month or one year…just so you do it at least once in your life.
By the way, here’s a map of where I’ve been to date.
